The evolution and dissemination of the technologies that deal with digitally codified information, has been changing our lives in several ways. These changes constitute fascinating challenges to the academic community and to the professionals whose working areas are related with the creation of new gadgets based on those technologies, above all when they harness innovative forms of participation in work and society, and with the processes of adoption and exploration of those technologies in work contexts or others that involve social interaction.

The Department of Information Systems congregates teachers and researchers whose valentias and interests are highly related with those challenges. The department assumes it is essential to its actuation the combination of abilities on creation of gadgets based on information technologies with abilities resulting form the understanding of human and social phenomena related to the adoption and exploration of those gadgets and the use of information. Special attention is given to organizations (private companies and other institutions, public and private), while places particularly relevant where those phenomena occur.

The Department of Information Systems is associated to the scientific area of Information Systems and Technologies, also designated by Information Systems or Management Information Systems. This area includes R&D and teaching procedures that mingle paradigms from Engineering and Human and Social Science.

The creation of the Department of Information Systems in 1999 resulted from the autonomization of one actuation area of the Department of Informatics: Management Information Systems. With the creation in the early 90’s of a new Licenciatura on this subject – Licenciatura in Management Information Systems in nowadays Licenciatura in Information Systems and Technologies – this area significantly increased its dimension and capacity of accomplishment thus having justified the creation of a new department.
